Close-up shots reveal quieter moments inside the chaos
Detail shots bring viewers up close, just like they were standing right there with me. The small cattle pen was crowded and chaotic, with two cowboys roping calves on horseback and five cowboys doctoring and branding. I stood in one spot, trying not to get mowed down, all the while looking through my lens. This cowboy’s job for the morning was castrating bull calves at a West Texas ranch. As I waited for the next calf to be roped and brought over from the herd, the cowboy took a smoke break after lighting his cigarette with the branding iron. I focused on his hand and the story it told.
