A roadrunner poses for pictures at Big Bend

When I’m on vacation, I sometimes spot wildlife that I don’t normally see. I often grab my camera and shoot quickly, afraid I’ll miss the shot. This beautiful roadrunner came up to us while we picnicked in Big Bend National Park. We offered him some cookie crumbs as he came closer and closer. Slowly, I stretched out onto my stomach to get at ground level to shoot. He posed for me for several minutes, displaying his colorful feathers. I’ve seen many roadrunners race across the road in Texas, but I’d never been up close and eye-level with one until that day. I waited for each shot until his crest feathers rose. He eventually walked away, rather slowly for a roadrunner, and looked back at us as if to say “Thanks” before running back into the brush.
