Members of a specialty car club do more than talk shop
It was 2011, and neither Shawn Jones nor Jason White could find an organization that catered to Central Texas car enthusiasts. Sure, a brief Google search unearthed multiple forums for Camaro lovers or Corvette enthusiasts, but really, as far as Shawn could tell, there was no catchall that provided car aficionados a place to meet, admire, and give back.
“We wanted one place where you could learn about all the local car meets and car shows, whether you’re into classics or high-end exotics,” says Shawn, a Williamson County resident. “So we started Sweet Rides. But really, it’s about more than cars. We want to give back to the community.”
And they do. Sweet Rides has taken part in three service-oriented community events:
Cruise to the Capitol: For the last three years, Sweet Rides has partnered with Michael Marr and The Sunshine Kids Foundation to give exotic car rides to terminally ill children from around the country. The kids take a charter bus to the San Marcos Convention Center, where they can choose from 40 cars to ride in. Then, with a full police escort, they ride from San Marcos to the Texas State Capitol.
Blue Santa Toy Drive: In December 2014, owners of classic, custom, and restored cars brought their cars to Corvette World in Austin and, led by a full police escort, drove to the offices of the Austin American-Statesman to drop off the toys collected for the Blue Santa Toy Drive. In past years, Sweet Rides has helped with similar Blue Santa drives in Leander.
Flying Vikings: The nonprofit group Flying Vikings takes disabled children for airplane rides at the Georgetown Municipal Airport, sometimes offering them short aviation lessons as therapy. To help make the already enjoyable experience even more memorable, Sweet Rides uses their swanky vehicles to chauffeur the kids from their homes to the airport.
